Fight For Survival On The World's Deadliest River Crossing
Wildlife legend David Attenborough famously made the world sit up in amazement when his dulcet tones accompanied the thundering of millions of hoofs crossing treacherous rivers on The Great Wildebeest Migration. One of nature’s greatest phenomenon’s, the migration across the Serengeti and Masai Mara eco-system entails a staggering 1.5 million wildebeest, 300,000 zebras, and 200,000 gazelles relentlessly on the move in search of seasonal rains and sustenance. Fraught with peril along the way, their journey becomes even more dangerous at the crucial Mara river crossing from Northern Tanzania to Kenya where predators lie in wait.
Albums: Hector Gannet The Great Shakedown
Hector Gannet might be labelled a folk-rock band, but there’s a lot more going on here than acoustic guitars and catchy choruses. Aaron Duff’s songwriting takes in everything from Celtic folk to jazz, blues and big, sweeping rock songs, giving the album plenty of variety without ever making it feel disjointed.
Albums: Boy In Space The Man WHO Lost It All
Having built a devoted global fanbase on a steady run of singles and EPs, Boy In Space finally steps into full-length territory with The Man Who Lost It All, and the result feels like a significant moment for Robin Lundbäck. More personal than anything he has released to date, the ten-track collection not only offers a deeper insight into the man behind the moniker but also stands as his most cohesive body of work yet.

Seismic Change, Despair, Survival: Our Friends In The North
I was up at 6am to finish the landmark BBC 2 Our Friends in the North series and wondered how the stage version would pack three decades and nine hours of TV into one hundred and ten minutes. More significantly, how relevant is the storyline in 2026?

Live Review: Westlife - Utlilita Arena, Birmingham
Initially known as a sextet called Six As One, then later renamed as IOYO, the Sligo-born boyband Westlife came to the attention of Louis Walsh very quickly. Seeing potential in three of the six members, he quickly decided he needed to audition for a better line-up, and on July 3, 1998, Westside was born.

Live Review: Vonda Shepard - Huntingdon Hall, Worcester
Vonda Shepard maintains a close bond with her UK audience. Despite having released her eponymous debut album on Reprise Records back in 1989, her status as a mainstream artist on these shores really arrived almost a decade later when she featured prominently on the hit TV series Ally McBeal.
Tattershall Lakes: 31 Days of Halloween
Halloween is hands down my children's favourite festival, so the chance to begin the festivities extra early was beyond exciting for the two of them. Tattershall Lakes is a destination many friends have spoken about over the years, but one we had never quite got around to exploring.
Ben Forster - The Magic Of A Musical Christmas
Ben Forster has performed on some of the biggest stages in the world, but there’s still one theatre that gives him goosebumps every time he steps onto it.
Book Review: Freddie Mercury: My Life In Lyrics By Mary Austin
Freddie Mercury was a master of theatrical excess, a vocalist of extraordinary power and a songwriter capable of turning the most intimate emotions into arena-sized anthems. Yet behind the flamboyant stage persona was a private individual whose thoughts and feelings were often concealed from public view.
Mae Estes: The ’90s Called…
Country music has never been short of nostalgia, but Mae Estes is giving it a fresh spin with her new EP, The 90s Called. Drawing on the voices, stories and unapologetic attitude of country’s golden era, Estes pays tribute to the artists who first inspired her to pick up a microphone.

It is nearly 20 years since former University of Indianapolis football scholarship students turned colourful pop act The Hoosiers burst into the charts with their #5 charting debut single, Worried About Ray. Live Review: Stevie Wonder at the Utilita Arena, Birmingham
There are artists who the world loves fleetingly and get remembered for a certain song or a certain moment, then there are artists who become icons with back catalogues that don't just form a soundtrack for one generation, but whose music becomes a soundtrack for moments big and small around the world on repeat. Stevie Wonder falls effortlessly into the latter.

Albums: NY Loose Monolith Kids
Led by the formidable Brijitte West, NY Loose was one of the great underground secrets of mid-’90s New York rock. They had the swagger, the sleaze, the guitars and, crucially, the songs. Their 1995 Loosen Up! EP helped build a devoted following before Hollywood Records came calling, eventually releasing the band’s debut album, Year of the Rat, in 1996. Yet despite touring with the likes of L7 and Marilyn Manson and seeing their brilliant track Spit appears on The Crow: City of Angels soundtrack – the commercial breakthrough never arrived.
Albums: Walt Disco Walt Disco
There is something fitting about calling your third album Walt Disco. After two records spent pushing, pulling and occasionally losing themselves in different directions, the Glasgow band have arrived at a record that feels less like a reinvention than an acceptance of everything they have already been. It is a statement of identity, certainly, but not one delivered with the certainty of a band who have finally solved themselves. Instead, Walt Disco finds its strength in the messiness of becoming.

Album Review: Bróna McVittie Supernatural
What makes the album particularly compelling is the way McVittie brings together the warmth and intimacy of the harp and traditional vocal styles with atmospheric electronic production. Rather than feeling like a clash of old and new, these elements compliment one another beautifully, giving the music a distinctive identity that is at once organic, otherworldly and modern.
Poem Of The Week: Facing The Music By Mairéad Byrne
Facing the Music It's not frost; it's snow It's not backfire; it's gun-fire It's not fun; it's alcoholism It's not a tantrum; it's violence It's not witty; it's abuse It's not marriage; it's divorce It's not anger; it's rage It's not nothing; it's a lump It's not fear; it's reality It's not sleep; it's death It's not au revoir; it's the end Perhaps the misi…
If Cats Could Talk: At Warble’s Bar By Galahad Porter
Lucy is pregnant after a one-night stand with Sam from Brooklyn. The thing is that’s all she knows about him even if she does still feel that the spark between them was real. The novel opens with a somewhat rebellious Lucy (real name Lucia) working in a bar in Brooklyn, having travelled from Italy, to try to find Sam.
Classical Music: Sol Gabetta Saint-Saëns & Lalo Cello Concertos
Her playing is fluent throughout, her agility impressive and her rhythmic precision unerring, while soloist and orchestra alike embrace the full Romantic sweep of these scores. Period instruments are often sold as a corrective to excess; here they serve the opposite purpose, lending these concertos a warmth and freshness that makes a persuasive case for all three.

Classical Music: Gershwin Variations
Some recordings politely ask for your attention. This one pulls up a stool at the bar, loosens its tie and calls for another round. For anyone who loves Gershwin and the jazz idiom, Lucas Debargue's Gershwin Variations is a double album to treasure: it fizzes, it swings and it oozes panache from first bar to last. The first disc, recorded at the Philharmonie de Paris, pairs Debargue with the Orchestre de Paris under Elim Chan. The Piano Concerto in F skips along with real clarity, the orchestration crisp, the syncopations relished and the percussion crackling with rhythmic fervour.

Classical Music: The Beethoven Connection Volume 2
Jean-Efflam Bavouzet has a gift for turning musical archaeology into pure pleasure. In this second volume of The Beethoven Connection he has unearthed some lovely pieces, and he plays them with passion and a beautiful tone from his Yamaha piano. His sensitivity, expressiveness and virtuosity shine throughout the recital.
Venus At Midnight: The Amygdala Safari By Carmella de Keyser
Carmella de Keyser is at her most persuasive when in freefall: plummeting through the ‘cyan blue’ with Icarean abandon and crossing borders of the senses as though synaesthetic apprehension were a most natural condition of understanding, the poet promulgates a new aesthetic, subordinating all formal considerations to the moment of pure invigoration.
Albums: Teenage Fanclub Do Not Dare To Dream
Following the Fannies’ 2023 Nothing Lasts Forever and last year’s side-project Butler, Blake & Grant, Blake and (day job) co. return with Teenage Fanclub’s 13th full-length album. Opening with There Was You, a playful, folksy and upbeat song about how magical surprises can interrupt otherwise predetermined lives, Do Not Dare To Dream gets off to an engaging start. There’s an easy warmth to the song, but also a sense that the album might be setting its ambitions rather lower than some of the band’s finest work.

Album Review: Everyone Says Hi Funny Cos It's True
At its heart, this is hook-heavy, groove-forward indie pop with a wonderfully hazy, retro-futurist sheen. The songs are packed with infectious melodies and big, anthemic choruses, while the warm production gives the record a timeless quality. There are echoes of classic songwriting craft alongside more psychedelic, contemporary textures, making the album feel both familiar and fresh.

Albums: Blossoms Songs From The Wedding Cake
Tom Ogden’s songwriting has become noticeably more personal, drawing heavily on marriage, relationships and the small details that make up a shared life. Yet there is nothing overly grand about the subject matter. Instead, Blossoms find their material in arguments, car journeys, television nights and domestic routines, turning the stuff of everyday existence into bright, melodic indie-pop.
Albums: Vonda Shepard Nine Songs
There has never been any sense of Vonda Shepard rushing to put out a record simply for the sake of having something new to say. Instead, she has always seemed more interested in maintaining the remarkable bond she has built with her live audience, whilst allowing herself the time and space to follow her own creative process. New music arrives when it is ready — and, on Nine Songs, that patience has once again paid off.

Killing Heidi was only the beginning. Hooper subsequently explored a folkier side with The Verses alongside Jesse, before embarking on a solo career that has seen her continually experiment with an array of genres and sonic landscapes. Overnight Success, her third solo album, finds her drawing all of those experiences together and planting herself firmly in the Americana and country sphere.
